BOWLING – Last 5 Overs

Wham, bam, slam – India’s new-ball attack came out firing and had ample of bounce to dislodge movement and keep the New Zealanders in check. But a Free Hit off Bhuvneshwar’s bowling gave them the boost and they took the bull by the horns, bowling through the field restrictions with blistering pace Allen upped after settling in. But it was the very aggressiveness that made his success possible that led him to his downfall. He got relieved and New Zealand was left at 80/2 and it was a good sign for the Indians that they got a good opening with two young batsmen.

It seems like there’s no better way to express it than ‘batathon’ held in Christchurch. It was simply brutal ball striking, with the ball being tonked and thumped to all parts of the park. New Zealand have set a new record in the T20I format for home and Glenn Phillips topped the score board, entertained everyone with some outlandish shots. The Indian bowlers struggled to make any breakthrough in the opposition’s batting order and allowed over 200 and more runs in 4 consecutive games, including 3 games, where they allowed over 225. It’s becoming an increasing problem for the Men in Blue and they don’t appear to have any answers as yet.

New Zeeland Inning

19.6 ovs • 225/4
FOUR! This was a great way to close the innings. Most innovative of its kind. 14 runs off the final over as New Zealand finish on 225/4. Kumar takes a full ball, on middle. Phillips changes his hands on the bat and takes the form of a left-hander. He swings it away in front of square. The right-hander has but one man square of the wicket, and he is, well beaten to his right.

19.5 ovs • 221/4
Low full toss on off. Phillips takes the ball wide of long off. Tilak Varma is fast to his right, but is unable to pick the ball up in one stroke, giving the hitters a chance to come back and score the second run easily.

19.4 ovs • 219/4
Bhuvi is very consistent in his line and length, and also on off, Bracewell shuffles around but can’t seem to get away from Bhuvi. Michael digs it out to extra cover for a single. New Zealand have reached 219 to become the highest scorers in home T20Is.

19.3 ovs • 218/4

Back to the wide line, on a good length. Phillips is on his feet and spanks Axar Patel in deep cover. Just a single. Off the over 7 runs so far.

19.3 ovs • 217/4
Wide. Bumper slow, outside. Phillips can’t touch it with his feet, but his player can touch it with his head. The word “wide” is given for height.

19.2 ovs • 216/4
On a length, pushed across the leftie. Bracewell extends his arms and hits the lofted ball to right deep cover. On as a sub, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi picks up as Naman Dhir gets it up and down to his right and slides with ease. Three strikes and back to the pitcher’s mound for Phillips.

19.1 ovs • 213/4

Runs along the tramline and is shortened slightly. Phillips extends his arm, striking out at it. Drags it back towards the bowler and Bhuvi can only make a half-stop. A single is taken as the ball deflects towards extra cover.

19.1 ovs • 212/4

Wide! Outside the scope of the tram, then, Phillips resigns. Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3-0-35-0) will bowl the last over of the first innings. Also, India have been penalised for not completing their overs in time. This means that India will need to have an additional fielder in the ring.

18.6 ovs • 211/4

A full toss, outside off. Phillips is gone from his form and misses it down to long off for a single.

18.5 ovs • 210/4
FOUR! Incredible shot. Reddy is almost able to secure a yorker on off. Phillips is tucked into the crease and is close to the line. Gets just enough leverage to get under the ball and he goes inside out to the right of deep cover for a boundary. After one bounce and over the ropes. 11 runs off the over with a ball to go. New Zealand scored 210 and this is their best T20I score at the ground.

18.4 ovs • 206/4
Low full toss, on middle, that is slogged away to the left of deep mid-wicket for a brace.

18.3 ovs • 204/4
FOUR! Up and over. Reddy fielding the yorker misfields it and delivers a full toss outside off. Phillips is in the middle of the ball and is able to drive it over cover. The man from the inner ring and another player at deep cover pursue the ball, but it beats them.

18.2 ovs • 200/4
Yorker attempted, on middle. Bracewell’s heave is misplaced down to long on for a single. The 200 is on the cards for New Zealand.

18.1 ovs • 199/4

Given LBW but successfully overturned. Well, well, this looked pretty straight on the fly, but Bracewell lives! Seam-up is Reddy’s ball. He takes a shot for the yorker but it is a low full toss, angled in from around the wicket, on middle and leg. Bracewell hops over the stumps to the scoop. He attempts a one-handed shot, but misses and is pinged low on the front pad. Michael Bracewell steps in to review at Glenn Phillips’ request. No bat in play on UltraEdge, but the Ball Tracking has the ball missing the leg stump by a coat of varnish. The batters had crossed over for a leg bye but since the on-field umpire had given it out, the ball is deemed dead. So, it remains as a dot.

17.6 ovs • 199/4
Had to hurry! There he’d have been an easy target. Towards off stump – off. Michael has it in the air and dribbles it off to extra cover for the single. A well-made catch from Shreyas Iyer but he starts a bit late in the chase when Bracewell dives to bring home the wicket.
17.6 ovs • 198/4
Wide. This is beyond the tramline, extremely full. But Bracewell shrugs it off.

17.5 ovs • 197/4
Takes a good yorker but it is played low, wide off. Phillips goes out and gets it to deep cover for one additional run.

17.4 ovs • 196/4
Low full toss, tailing back in, on middle. Bracewell plays around his front pad as he flicks it to deep backward square leg for a single.

Important wicket on the part of Indians. Jacobs stumbles off, very disappointed. At number 6, Michael Bracewell joins in.

17.3 ovs • 195/4
OUT! BEVON JACOBS IS RUN OUT!

Great work done by Arshdeep Singh

Singh gets the yorker in, around the off stump. Phillips jam’s it out next to him and after a slight hesitation, Jacobs calls him in for a speedy single. Arshdeep quickly reaches the ball on the follow-on and kicks it onto the stumps with his left foot. He manages to knock the stumps as Bevon dashes for the stumps. It is not more than a courteous request by Indians, and it goes up to the ceiling. After the dive, the replays show Jacobs to be short. It is a cheap wicket.

Is that a ‘run out’ at the batting end? Arshdeep ran forward on his follow-through, and kicked the ball into the stumps. Jacobs leapt to his death but his bat still extended a little beyond the crease. The TV umpire had to determine if Arshdeep’s left knee came into contact with the stumps first or the ball. The next shot confirmed it – it was the ball’s turn that hit first and his knee was clear of the stumps.

17.2 ovs • 195/3
FOUR! In the gap. Arshdeep takes the pace off and pushes it across the right-hander, on a good length. Phillips eats up the width while carving his shot to the left for deep point, off Axar Patel.

17.1 ovs • 191/3

With field set for the wide yorker, Arshdeep heads in from over the wicket. Ball low in full toss, near to tramline. Jacobs slices it to deep back point that he makes a single.

Last 3 overs left. With the ball in their hands, New Zealand are getting close to 200, and are hoping to add a further 30-40 runs if they continue to hit the runs at the same rate. Arshdeep Singh (3-0-36-1) will bowl his last over.

16.6 ovs • 190/3
FOUR! Jump into the air, bounce and over the ropes. It was a decent one for New Zealand and 18 runs were scored in the over. Yadav hits it on a good length and goes and attacks the sticks. Phillips remains by the line, and stands with an open posture. Any attempt to cut it off will be futile, as the lofted shot will go over the bowler’s head and over to Tilak Varma at long on.

16.5 ovs • 186/3
Strikes a back length, on middle. With Jaobs on the drive it heads up towards long on for a single. So, there’s a bit of a delay. I.ndia vs New Zeeland 1st T20 Live Scorecard 2027
